Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Crohn’s disease is another one. Generally, different types of IBD affect different parts of the body, and with UC, the large intestine is affected. While this is a lifelong disease, most people experience periods of remission in between flare ups—which is one of the main goals of treatment.
What is it?
Who does it affect?
What causes it?
UC is a chronic disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the large intestine, including the colon and rectum. While some cases are severe, most people have mild to moderate symptoms. New flare ups are thought to be triggered by stress and diet, among other things.
Between 600,000 and 900,000 people in the US are estimated to have UC. Onset can happen at any age, but it’s most commonly developed between ages 15 and 30. It’s also more common in people with an immediate family member who is also affected.
Experts are still studying the causes of ulcerative colitis. But it’s thought to occur when your immune system responds abnormally to a viral or bacterial infection in the colon, causing it to remain inflamed indefinitely. Other potential factors include your microbiome and environment.
