Understanding H. Pylori

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria that can cause infections in the stomach or upper part of the small intestine. While many people contract it as a child, only about 20% show symptoms. H. pylori bacteria, however, is the most common cause of peptic ulcers and can also lead to gastritis, or more rarely, stomach cancer.

What is it?

Who does it affect?

What causes it?

H. pylori bacteria attack the lining that protects your stomach. The bacteria weaken and irritate the stomach tissue, which is what increases your risk of sores and ulcers. It’s thought to spread from person to person through saliva and other bodily fluids; or contaminated food and water.

Between 30% and 40% of people in the US get infected with H. pylori. Risk factors include age (children under age 10 and adults over age 50 are at higher risk) as well as crowded or unsanitary living conditions.

Health experts know that the H. pylori bacteria has coexisted with humans for thousands of years. It’s found in saliva, stool, and even the plaque on your teeth. There is no vaccine, but washing your hands and being sure to cook with and drink clean water can lower risk of infection.
