Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the chronic presence of acid reflux, which is when stomach acid flows the wrong way back into your esophagus. While almost everyone experiences acid reflux at some point or another, GERD occurs when symptoms appear mildly at least twice a week or severely at least once a week.
What is it?
Who does it affect?
What causes it?
A chronic GI condition, GERD occurs when the muscle between your esophagus and stomach stops closing properly. As a result, food and liquid from your stomach rises back up into the esophagus, causing irritation including symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation.
GERD is a common condition that affects about 20% of the US population. Risk factors include age (people over age 40 are at higher risk), smoking, pregnancy, obesity, and other GI conditions like a hiatal hernia and delayed stomach emptying.
There is no one exact cause of GERD, but a combination of preexisting conditions and external risk factors can increase your risk of developing it. Other triggers may include taking certain medications such as aspirin or eating fried or spicy food. Without proper treatment, GERD can cause lasting complications.
