Understanding IBS-D

While many people think irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disease, it’s actually a common syndrome defined by recurring symptoms including stomach pain, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS with diarrhea, or IBS-D, is one of three subtypes of IBS, each of which is defined based on the most common type of bowel movement experienced.

What is it?

Who does it affect?

What causes it?

IBS is a chronic functional disorder of the GI tract, which means that the gut and brain aren’t communicating like they’re supposed to. With IBS-D, that breakdown makes for a sensitive digestive tract that causes mostly loose or watery stools.

IBS is a fairly common condition, affecting 10-15% of Americans. Risk factors include gender (cases are more common in women than men), age (people under age 50 are higher risk), food intolerances, and anxiety and depression.

While the exact cause of IBS is unknown, researchers think it may be caused by sensitivity in the nervous system or irregular muscle contractions in the intestines. Other potential causes include severe infections and changes in the microbes that live in your gut and intestines.
