Crohn’s disease, like ulcerative colitis (UC), is a type of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. It was named after Dr. Burril B. Crohn, who first described the disease in 1932. Symptoms vary by person, but also by the subtype of Crohn’s you have, which is determined by the part of the body it impacts most.

What causes it?
Crohn’s disease can cause chronic inflammation in any part of the GI tract from the mouth to the anus, including the bowel wall. It commonly impacts the end of the small intestine and beginning of the large intestine. While it’s a lifelong condition, periods of remission can last for weeks or years.
It’s estimated that more than half a million Americans have Crohn’s. Men and women are equally likely to be affected, and it can occur at any age, but it’s most often diagnosed in people ages 20 to 30. Smoking or having a relative who’s also affected may increase your chance of developing Crohn’s.
Causes aren’t fully understood, but experts think it’s triggered by an autoimmune reaction to bacteria in your digestive tract, causing your immune system to mistakenly attack healthy cells. The result is chronic inflammation. Environment, a high-fat diet, and use of NSAIDs may also play a role.
