Oftentimes, people with SIBO don’t even realize they have it. We can help you build a better understanding of your digestive health to support long-term relief.
Your small intestine is where food mixes with your digestive fluids. It’s also how nutrients get absorbed into your body. When the normal flow of contents from your small intestine to your large intestine is interrupted or slowed down, it can throw your whole digestive system off balance—and cause small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
What is it?
Who does it affect?
What causes it?
SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, is what it sounds like: an abundance of bacteria builds up in your small intestine (where it’s generally not supposed to be) and can produce toxins that interrupt your ability to absorb nutrients and cause a range of symptoms from mild to severe.
While the overall prevalence of SIBO isn’t known, doctors think it’s more common than previously thought. As many as 80% of people with IBS are thought to have SIBO. Having a condition that causes food to move more slowly through the body is also a risk factor.
It’s a common complication of gastric bypass and other abdominal surgeries, such as for treating peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. Structural issues of the small intestine, including a build up of scar tissue, as well as certain diseases like Crohn’s, radiation enteritis, and celiac disease can also cause SIBO.
